Reasons to move your UK pension to the USA

There are many reasons that would lead you to wish to move your UK pension to the USA.

  • Simplify – If you have multiple pension pots in the UK you may desire to consolidate them into a single scheme allowing you to manage it more effectively.
  • Drawdown in dollars – If you have a UK pension that is in pounds you may want to be able to easily draw down in dollars now that you live in the US.
  • Multi currencies – You may also want to keep some pounds invested but also invest in dollars.
  • Provider restrictions – Another reason could be that the provider currently holding your pension does not allow for non-uk residents.

Options if you wish to transfer your UK pension transfer to USA

One option would be to move to a pension vehicle that offers an important range of investment choice, flexibility and that would grow free of capital gain tax or income tax, the International SIPP (self-invested personal pension)

Another option to explore, although not as highly recommended nowadays, is the QROPS (qualifying recognized overseas pension scheme). It also offers advantages such as currency flexibility and investment options but incurs tax charges and also loss of UK benefits.
